What Is the Keryney Score?
The Keryney Score is a 0–100 quality index that rates any travel destination based on objective, verifiable data — not subjective reviews. A score of 90 means the destination excels across all dimensions. A score of 50 means it is average, with specific areas that may not meet your needs.
The score answers one question travelers often can't find a direct answer to: "Is this destination actually worth it for my trip style?"
The Five Dimensions
Every Keryney Score is calculated from five weighted dimensions:
| Dimension | What It Measures | |---|---| | Transit Access | Distance to nearest train station, bus stop, and airport. Walkability score. | | Neighborhood Safety | Normalized safety index based on publicly available data. | | Local Facilities | Density of pharmacies, supermarkets, and convenience stores within 1 km. | | Cultural Experiences | Proximity to UNESCO sites, temples, museums, and notable landmarks within 50 km. | | Surroundings | Parks, beaches, outdoor activities, and natural attractions nearby. |
Each dimension contributes a weighted sub-score. The final Keryney Score is the weighted average of all five.
Why Not Just Use Star Ratings?
Star ratings aggregate subjective opinions — they measure how guests felt, not what actually exists at the destination. Two travelers visiting the same hotel in Kyoto may rate it very differently based on expectations, while the Keryney Score for that location remains constant because the train station is 400 meters away regardless of their mood.
Keryney Score = objective infrastructure and environment data Star ratings = subjective guest experiences
Both have value. The Keryney Score answers "Is this a well-connected, safe, facility-rich location?" before you book.
How Often Is It Updated?
Scores are calculated from a mix of OpenStreetMap data and a handful of curated sources updated periodically. The score for a destination is cached for 30 days. Major infrastructure changes (a new subway line, a UNESCO listing) will be reflected on the next batch recalculation.
Score Tiers
| Score | Tier | What It Means | |---|---|---| | 80–100 | Excellent | Strong across all dimensions. Highly recommended. | | 65–79 | Great | Well above average. Minor trade-offs in one or two areas. | | 50–64 | Good | Solid destination. Check the breakdown to understand limitations. | | 35–49 | Fair | Some dimensions are weak. Best for travelers who know what to expect. | | 0–34 | Needs Attention | Significant gaps in access, safety, or facilities. Plan accordingly. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a low score mean I shouldn't go? No. A remote beach resort may score 45 due to low transit access and zero pharmacies nearby — but that is exactly why travelers choose it. Read the score breakdown, not just the number.
Can I request a score for a destination not in the database? If your itinerary includes a destination Keryney hasn't scored yet, you can request an on-demand score calculation directly from the trip planning interface.
Is the Keryney Score available via API? Yes. An Open API is available for developers who want to integrate destination quality data into their own applications.
